The Visiting Christian Science Nursing Care of Greater Chicago (VCSNCGC) is an LLC subsidiary of Hill Top Center. Since 2014 we provide nursing care for Christian Scientists in their own homes throughout metropolitan Chicago, including Southern Wisconsin and Northern Indiana.
In 1946, four Christian Scientists from Chicago and Evanston incorporated the Great Lakes Foundation. The purpose of the foundation was to “maintain and operate a refuge for those seeking comfort and rest.” In the years following, the foundation acquired Hill Top Farm in unincorporated Lake County just west of Lake Bluff. The name of the foundation was changed to Hill Top Sanatorium.
In the early years, the original mansion was used both for patients and to house nurses. In the 1960s, a modern facility was constructed with patient rooms, a dining room, a reading room and administrative offices. Two buildings containing four townhouses each were built for nurses and their families. The mansion continued to be used as housing for some nurses. In the 1970s and 80s, two additional groups of townhouses were built and the mansion was razed.
During the 1960s and 1970s, two Christian Science Visiting Nurse services (Northeastern Illinois and Greater Chicago) also operated in the Chicago area. In 1987, Hill Top Sanatorium assumed responsibility for all visiting nurse services in the six-county Chicago Metropolitan Area.
By the 1990s, Hill Top Center (the new name) offered Christian Science Nursing Care in a facility along with visiting Christian Science nursing services, sheltered living, and independent living for Christian Science practitioners. Throughout its existence, Hill Top offered substantial amounts of benevolence to Christian Scientists who did not qualify for Medicare and did not have sufficient funds. Early in the 21st century, the economics of Christian Science Nursing had changed substantially, making the facility model of Christian Science nursing economically unfeasible in the Chicago area. Thus, in 2011, the Board of Directors made the difficult decision to close the facility, and it was sold in 2012.
For the balance of 2012 and throughout 2013, the Board of Directors prayed for direction, conducted numerous strategy and planning sessions, and investigated different models of Christian Science nursing care used internationally. The most feasible, sustainable form was determined to be home nursing care. Because Christian Science visiting nursing services have traditionally limited their visits to a maximum of 2 hours per day, the Board decided to call the service “Home Nursing Care.” The intention was to provide nursing care for Christian Scientists in their own homes without a specific time limitation. Because of limited Christian Science nursing options in Southern Wisconsin and none in Northern Indiana, the Board decided to extend its coverage to these areas as well.
The Visiting Christian Science Nursing Care of Greater Chicago (VCSNCGC) began operation with one Journal – listed Christian Science nurse on February 15, 2014. In November of the same year, a second part-time Journal – listed Christian Science nurse joined the service. VCSNCGC has been organized as an LLC as a subsidiary of Hill Top Center.
